Privacy Policy
Last updated 26 August 2026
Exam Evolution is a four-skill IELTS teaching platform used by learners on their own and by teachers with their classes. This policy explains what the app holds, who can see it, and how to take a copy or delete it. We keep it short and plain.
What we collect
You can practise without an account. If you create one, or join a class, we hold more — because a teacher cannot mark work they cannot see.
- Your account. An email address and a display name you choose. Your display name is shown to the teacher of any class you join. Passwords are handled by our authentication provider and stored only as a salted hash — we never see or keep the password itself.
- Your work and progress. Lessons completed, answers given, per-question detail, your reading and listening ratings, and anything you write in a Writing lesson, together with feedback left on it. This is stored in your browser and synced to our database so it survives changing device.
- Messages. Messages between you and the teacher of a class you are in.
- Usage analytics. How the app is used — pages viewed, questions answered, lessons started and finished — so we can see where learners get stuck. Only collected if you accept analytics when asked; decline and nothing is sent.
- Session recordings. If enabled, anonymised playbacks of on-screen interaction. Text you type into form fields is masked and not captured. Names and other text already displayed on the page can appear in a recording.
- Technical data. What your browser sends — device and browser type, approximate region, and a randomly generated identifier.
If you use Exam Evolution with a teacher
Joining a class with a join code makes your work visible to that class’s teacher. They can see your display name, your progress and altitude, which lessons you have finished and how you scored, your written work and any AI feedback on it, and your messages with them. They can also keep private notes about your learning, which you can ask us for at any time.
Leaving the class ends that access for anything afterwards. If a teacher deletes a class, your written work is kept — it is yours — and simply stops being linked to that class.
AI feedback on your writing
When you ask for feedback on a piece of writing, the text you wrote — with the task it answers and your plan for it — is sent to Anthropic to be assessed, and the assessment is stored against your work. Your name, email and account identifier are not sent. Writing is only sent when you ask for feedback; nothing is sent in the background.
How we use it
To run and improve the app: to save your progress, to let your teacher teach you, to understand where the coaching is working, to fix problems, and to decide what to build next. We do not sell your data and we do not use it for advertising.
Who we share it with
We use service providers who process data on our behalf:
- Supabase — the database and sign-in that hold your account, progress and written work.
- Vercel — hosts the app and keeps standard server logs.
- Anthropic — assesses writing you submit for AI feedback (see above).
- PostHog — product analytics and session replay, only after you accept analytics.
- Sentry — receives technical error reports when something breaks on our servers.
- Our email provider — sends password resets and teacher verification codes, via Supabase.
We share only what each provider needs to do its job. We may also disclose data if the law requires it.
Cookies and local storage
The app uses your browser’s local storage to keep your settings and your progress, and our analytics provider uses cookies or similar identifiers to recognise a returning session. You can clear these through your browser at any time. Signing out clears the learning data this browser was holding, which matters on a shared or classroom computer.
Your choices
- Take a copy. Your account → Download my data gives you everything we hold, as a JSON file, straight away.
- Delete your account. Your account → Delete my account. This is permanent and immediate: your progress, written work and messages are removed and cannot be recovered. Download a copy first if you want one.
- Decline analytics. Choose Decline when asked, and no events or recordings are collected.
- Leave a class at any time, from your account, to end a teacher’s access to your later work.
Depending on where you live (for example the EU/UK or California) you may have further rights to access, correct or delete your personal data. Write to us and we will honour applicable requests.
Data retention
Your account data is kept for as long as your account exists. Deleting your account removes it immediately, apart from short-lived backups which age out on their own. Bug reports you send keep their text but stop being linked to you.
Children
Exam Evolution is for people preparing for the IELTS exam and is not directed at children under 13. Where a school or language centre uses it with students under 18, that organisation is responsible for obtaining any consent required and for deciding what their teachers may see. If you believe a child has given us data they should not have, contact us and we will delete it.
Changes
If we make material changes we will update the date at the top of this page. Continued use means you accept the current version.
